CHAPTER THIRTEEN

"Find him!"

"We're on it. He jumped on the highway heading north."

"Don’t let him get missing. We need the kid. Do whatever you gotta do to get him."

After the police cleared out of the center, Ty jumped on the road to meet up with Charlene. She made up a bogus story of a possible kidnapping and gave a description of Deon and his accomplice to the detectives. One way or the other, Ty was going to save her center, and she didn’t care who took a hit to do it.

Paging Romano. Paging Romano. We need you at the nurses' station, please.

When Rose heard her name being called over the intercom, she quickly made her way to the nurses' station. She hadn’t done anything to get written up in a long time, so she was confused about why she was needed.

“You have a phone call. Some man has been calling nonstop. He sounds frantic.”

Frowning in confusion, Rose picked up the phone.

"Hello?”

"Rose! I need you to leave work. NOW! Meet me at the Ritz near the airport."

"What the fuck, Deon?” she hissed, trying not to cause a scene in front of the nurse. “What's going on? Why you sound like that?"

"Your fucking girlfriend is what's going on! Leave work, NOW. And don't call anyone."

Deon hung up, and Rose told her boss there was an emergency at home, and she had to leave early.

She didn't waste any time throwing her shit into her locker before she clocked out and hit the road.

Deon had her nervous as hell. She was in such a rush that she didn't realize Ty and Charlene had pulled out behind her. Ty figured Deon would call Rose and let her know what went down, so tailing her would be their best lead in finding him.

"Dad, what's going on?"

"I don't know, son. I’ll take care of it. But you need to do everything I tell you to do, alright?"

"I'm scared,” Jr. whined from the backseat. “Where's Mom?"

"She's on her way right now."

Spaz was on the line with the jack boyz, while Deon loaded his guns in anticipation of black trucks.

He called in for some mean artillery and wanted squads posted up around the city. When the calls were made and the goons were en route, he made sure his gun was ready when they reached the hotel.

After getting the keys from the front desk, they made their way to the elevator. While waiting for the doors to close, Deon glanced over at the bar and could've sworn he saw someone he knew. He made eye contact for a brief second with an older woman wearing a scarf around her hair, pearls around her neck, and, from what he could tell, a very expensive pair of shades. He felt so sure he knew the woman that he pressed the emergency button repeatedly to open the elevator doors again, but when they opened, she was gone.

"What's up?" Spaz asked with a confused expression.

"Thought I saw somebody…” Deon was in a trance. “Did you see that old lady at the bar?"

"Nigga, nah,” Spaz replied sharply. “You alright? It’s more important shit to worry about right now than some old buzzer you been coming here to knock down.”

“Fuck you, nigga,” Deon laughed. “Ain’t nobody knocking down no old ladies. She looked like one of my clients.”

“Yeah. I bet she is a client. Nasty.”

They exited the elevator on the 7th floor. Spaz checked to make sure the hall was clear before he let Deon and Jr. get off, and once everything checked out, he signaled for them to exit.

"Hey, I'm here," Rose called as soon as they got to their room.

"Come up to the 7th floor. Room 702. Make sure nobody follows you."

"Shit, Deon! What the fuck is going on!? You got me scared as hell right now. Who's supposed to be following me?”

"I don't know, Rose. Just do what I said, please! Goddamn.”

Rose was so nervous, she felt like she was going to pee on herself. She had no idea what was going on, who was following them, or if her son was alright. But she trusted Deon with her life. So whatever he told her to do, she did.

"Do you know a man named Deon?"

"No. Why?"

"I think I just saw him in the lobby."

"Did he see you?"

"Yeah. I think so."

"Shit! I told you to keep your head down!"

Zoey paced the room, trying to think of where she'd heard that name before. It rang bells in her head that were louder than a cathedral. She was sure the name had come up somewhere recently, but couldn’t remember where.

And then it finally hit her.

"Shit! He knows Nina! They're dating… or whatever. Do you think he'll mention anything?"

"I don't know, but he looks good. Nina made a good choice."

"Seriously?" Zoey said, with annoyance in her voice. "We don't have time to be playing fucking matchmaker here. Where did he go?"

"How the fuck should I know that? I don't work here."

"Well, you'd better figure it out. Since you wanted to drink so bad."

After a call and a large bribe to the front desk, Zoey was able to get Deon’s room number.

She bickered for damn near 30 minutes about which one of them was going to go knock, before finally deciding to go up together.

Deon didn't even bother to ask who was at the door because he figured it was Rose. But when he saw the two women standing on the other side. He stood in complete disbelief.

"Remember me?"

He could do nothing but nod.

"I know this is awkward. May we come in?"

He backed away from the door, letting them in, the whole time keeping his eyes on the unbelievable.

"Someone care to explain what the fuck is going on here?” Spaz growled.

Just as the woman was about to break the news, Rose came pounding the door down.

Deon quickly opened it, and Rose walked in, looking around the room. When she laid eyes on Zoey, she almost flipped, thinking she was caught in another love triangle.

"What the fuck is she doing here?" She glared at Zoey, then at Deon. “Don’t tell me you fucking this bitch, too. Is this what you called me here for?”

"I don't even know who that is,” Deon said. “But her…” He continued staring blankly at the older woman. “She must be the walking dead.”
