CHAPTER TWELVE

Zoey pulled into the pick-up line of the airport at exactly 3:25. With 10 minutes to spare, she parked and walked to the pay phone to make a phone call. Realizing the person she was calling was already off her flight, she ended her call and approached the woman standing at the curb, looking around as if she were waiting for someone to take her bags.

"Comfortable flight?"

"They had wine,” the woman replied nonchalantly.

“Well, then. I guess that’s all that matters,” Zoey replied in the same tone. “Let’s go.”

After clocking out on her break, Rose checked her messages. When she heard the message from Deon, she immediately called the school to make sure everything was ok. After being informed that Jr. was doing better, she called Deon, and of course, he gave her the third degree.

He didn't play when it came to his child.

He wanted to know if Ty had anything to do with why their son felt bad. He wanted to know if she was having any problems at home. He even asked if she was pregnant.

"No, Deon, what the fuck?” she scoffed. “I'm not pregnant. Regardless of what you might think, I ain't been with anybody but Ty."

"So why would he snap out like that?"

"I don't know. What's going on with you? Are you pregnant? Since you all up in my pussy."

Deon couldn't help but laugh. Despite all the bullshit they’d gone through, Rose knew how to make him smile.

“I’m tryna figure out what’s wrong with our kid, and you playing games.”

"I’m not, actually,” Rose said. “Did you get somebody pregnant?"

"Hell nah."

"Mhm. Let me find out."

When they were on good terms, Rose felt like a kid in a candy store every time she talked to Deon. They had always been able to joke around and have a good time with each other, even after an argument.

"I ain’t having no more babies,” he said. “Not unless I'm married."

"Whatever, Deon. I'm about to clock back in. I'll call you when I'm on my way."

"Alright, juicy booty."

After hanging up, he swiped down on his screen to view his messages. When he saw Nina’s picture, his dick instantly rocked up. He didn’t think she was the type to send sexy pictures out of the blue, but after the way his day started, he was happy she did.

"What you doing sending porn this time of day?" he texted back

"I got off early and got bored. What?"

"Mhm. Well, I like what I see, so what now?"

"Well, what do you wanna do about it, Mr.?"

They fed into each other's role-playing for a while, and then decided to meet up later.

Since she had already intruded on his territory, she felt it was only right that he come to hers. In more ways than one.

Back at the Ritz, Zoey and her guest went over her plan to make sure they both had it right. To calm her nerves, she rolled a blunt and sparked it up. That medical-grade shit was some of the best she'd ever had. She was loving the float on cloud nine.

She figured they would check out at 9:45, head out to Siesta, and meet Nina just as she was getting home from work. She had everything in order with some henchmen from Miami to deal with Ty, and she planned to take care of Charlene. She wanted that one to be personal, just because the bitch thought she could pull the wool over her eyes.

"It’s been a long time coming, Zoey. I've waited for this moment for years. I knew Ty was a snake the first day I laid eyes on her. She's just like that whore of a mother of hers."

Taking her turn with the joint, Zoey puffed deep, exhaled, and said, "I wish somebody would have warned me earlier. I’m glad Nina has somebody in her life who would go to the lengths you have to protect her.”

Deon took off early to get Jr. from school.

After his fit that day, he wanted to spend a little quality time to talk about what happened. As he neared the stoplight on Main Street and 301, a black SUV switched lanes, cutting him off, causing him to swerve onto the sidewalk.

The driver of the SUV gave him a warning look and sped off through the intersection. If that had happened five years ago, Deon would've hopped out of the car, letting off shots. Instead, he calmly reversed his car off the curb and took an alternate route to the school.

He started to feel antsy on his detour. So, he pulled into an alley, popped his trunk, and grabbed a black duffle bag. Once he was behind the wheel again, he pulled a Glock from the bag and tucked it into his belt, then grabbed his 12-gauge and tucked it under his seat.

The driver of the black truck gave him an eerie feeling, so he wanted to be prepared. On top of his own artillery and awareness, he made a call to a trusty friend who always had his back.

"G, I need you on standby. A nigga just ran me off the road downtown. He gave me a funny look before sped off and shit. I’m on my way to get my son from school, and wanna make sure we don’t run into no problems."

"Word. What kinda car the nigga in?"

"Black SUV. Gotta be from out of town somewhere. Funny-looking nigga with a flat top."

"Say no more. I’ma call the troops and put the word out. Where you at now?”

"I’m in the alley a street over from the school. Then we gon’ head over to chuckle cheese. Let him play a lil’ bit, then I'm at the crib.”

"Aight, bet. If a nigga want smoke, you know I keep a loud pack. Get your lil’ man and get the fuck out of dodge. It’s about to get real smokey downtown.”

Deon had been down with Spaz since elementary school. They always had each other's backs. If a nigga had beef with Spaz, Deon was right there. And if a nigga had beef with Deon, Spaz was on the same type of time. He was the hothead, and Deon kept it cool—to a certain extent. Niggas used to call them Fire and Ice back in the day.

Spaz didn't give two shits about popping one in a niggas ass if he had to, so Deon knew as soon as he made that phone call, his boy was going to be lurking.

It took him about ten minutes to reach the school. When he pulled up, he saw the SUV parked in line with three other SUVs exactly like it. Right away, he knew Ty was the dirty bitch to have a showdown at her place of business, especially in front of the kids.

He quickly circled the parking lot and parked in the teachers' area behind the school. Then made sure his Glock was loaded and the safety was off his shotty. As he walked the sidewalk from the back of the school to the front, he saw his boy, Spaz, parked in a parking spot closest to the door.

Nearing the entrance, he saw the driver of the SUV that cut him off posted at the front desk, and another guy standing at a distance from the playground. Spaz was so in tune with him that on his tenth step, he put out his blunt and met him at the door.

You would've thought you were watching a full line of Marines march in a parade the way he fell in line.

As they approached the front desk, the secretary was already on the phone informing Ty that Deon was there. Bypassing the desk completely, he headed straight to his son’s classroom without giving the clerk or the driver a second look.

Spaz was right on his heels, and as soon as he saw the big man flinch, he cleared him with a left hook that could've come from the arm of Mike Tyson himself.

When Ty saw them approaching her office, she ran back inside and locked the door.

Over the intercom, she called out a code red, informing all classrooms to lock their doors and wait for the police. No students were to be released to anyone until the police secured the premises. When they got to Jr.’s classroom, Spaz manned the hallway, making sure no one crept up on them from either side.

"Open the door," Deon called calmly to the teacher, careful not to frighten the children.

She shook her head no and said she didn't want to get involved. He took his focus off of her and looked around the classroom for Jr. Once he spotted him, he signaled for his son to come to the door.

"We got company, kid," Spaz called out from the end of the hall.

"Jr., open the door.,” Deon ordered.

Jr. took off running towards the door, and right as he reached for the lock, Ty came from a back room and pulled him away. At that instant, Deon kicked the door completely off the hinges, and at the same time, he heard two shots fired up the hallway. He pulled his gun, aiming it directly at Ty’s head, ready to pop her ass if she made any sudden moves.

"Let him go!” he shouted. “And I'm only asking your ass one time."

Spaz ran into the classroom, gun drawn as he faced the door, waiting for the other men from the parking lot. Jr. broke free and ran to his dad, and Deon scooped him up with Spaz two steps behind.

They exited the room through the door Ty had entered and came out into the alley. Jumping in the car, Deon made Jr. strap himself into his booster seat while reaching under his seat for the shotty and handing it to Spaz.

"You know how to use one of these?" he asked sarcastically.

"Nigga, is the mothafuckin’ sky blue?"
